And the Band Played On
Musical instruments by Sun sign
by Samuel F. Reynolds
The movements of the planets had been traditionally called the music of the spheres. At times, this celestial orchestra may sound heavy, like Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” or may invoke some of the discordance of Prince’s “When Doves Cry.” At other times, there is a sweeter, lighter and more harmonious sound -- much like Mozart’s “A Little Night Music” or James Taylor’s “You’ve Got a Friend.”
As we meditate on the glorious music of the heavens in our lives, we can also see reflections of this symphony in the instruments we use to make actual music here on Earth. The association of different musical instruments with various Sun signs is just another way to think about the instruments that add so much pleasure and meaning
to our lives.
Aries (March 21 - April 19)
As a sign that more often would like to go it alone -- or kick things off if they have to work with a group -- the guitar is a perfect manifestation of Aries energy. You can strum it as lightly as you like, or go for the harsher sounds that would appeal to a typical Aries. In fact, many guitars look like the symbol that represents Aries’ ruling planet, Mars.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)
As a grounded, deep and rich-sounding instrument, the bass resonates with the
earthy and stable energy of Taurus. The bass, whether in a classical orchestra
or jazz ensemble, helps to maintain and set the tone of the whole piece.
This is what Taurus people do for others in their daily lives.
Gemini (May 21 - June 20)
Considering that Gemini is an air sign that’s most associated with the lungs, it's only natural that we would look to the woodwind instruments, like flutes, reeds, etc. as instruments that resonate with the essence of this breathy sign. These instruments generally capture the playfulness, busyness and buoyant nature of
Cancer (June 21 - July 22)
As the zodiac sign that makes us think of down home, the more folksy instruments like the banjo, fiddle and the mandolin seem the most appropriate. In fact, the banjo with its round, white face invokes the Moon, the planet that rules Cancer. These instruments make us feel comfortable enough to dance, drink, be merry and feel at home.
Leo (July 23 - August 22)
There’s something brash, shiny and rather loud about Leo … like a lion roaring. Brass cymbals, gongs and drums capture the primal, dramatic and “roaring” sounds of this majestic sign. Like the heart in the human body, which is associated with Leo, drums maintain the rhythm of any orchestra or band.
Virgo (August 23 - September 22)
Virgos love challenge and precision. The xylophone is an instrument that proves to be an ample representation of the energy of this sign. The complexity of the instrument, its extensive melodic ranges, and the necessity of being meticulous while wielding the mallet to strike the right keys all appeal to children of the planet Mercury.
