Emma Watson is a fiery young woman. The actress
playing Harry Potter’s pal Hermione was born on an early spring day
in Paris on April 15, 1990, with the Sun in Aries -- the plucky, independent
first sign of the zodiac. Fiery Aries girls can take care of themselves, and
often prefer the uncertainties of freedom to the safety and comfort of a boring
Emma’s need for adventure is powerfully supported by her Moon in Sagittarius, the sign of faraway places. The emotional Moon’s presence in this mutable (adaptable) Fire sign shares the Aries Sun’s need for freedom. Sagittarius is a traveler and a teacher … an adventurer and true believer … one who loves by letting go. Individuals with the Moon in Sagittarius thrive by moving forward with purpose to explore the unknown.
Emma’s had quite an adventure so far, and will doubtless have many more in her exciting life. Yet as Hermione, we see a very thoughtful and grounded version of her fiery Sun and Moon. This is clearly shown by her Mercury, the planet of communication, in solid, earthy Taurus -- the most stable of signs. Mercury in Taurus has the advantage and disadvantage of certainty. This fixed Earth sign can state the obvious with simple authority, yet refuse to see things beyond a well-defined frame.
Direct experience, rather than abstraction, is Taurus’ way to truth. Emma’s mind, however, is not bound by the usual material limits of Taurus. Penetrating Pluto opposes Emma’s Mercury to turn a bucolic gaze into a wizard’s laser of a mind. Pluto concentrates and focuses to push through to other levels of perception.
Individuals with strong Mercury-Pluto contacts in their birth charts are often penetrating thinkers and powerful talkers, but many have been brutalized with words and are fearful of open communication. “Anything you say can and will be held against you” is a dark threat commonly associated with hard aspects to Mercury from either Saturn or Pluto. Mercury-Pluto is also a detective, a researcher and psychologist who peers below the surface to see what others cannot.
Fire and Earth can be an insensitive elemental pair. They describe two styles of action: unplanned and planned. Fire seeks direct experience; Earth seeks control of the experience. Emma, happily, has Venus, the planet of love, beauty and graciousness, in Pisces -- the sensitive, spiritual sign in which this planet is said to be “exalted.” It symbolizes her connection with spiritual or universal love. Emma’s Venus aligns in a harmonious trine with generous Jupiter to open her heart even further. Yet she can set sentiment aside when it’s time to act, with assertive Mars in the cool, intellectually inventive sign of Aquarius.
